Creative Arts

We place great emphasis on Creative Arts at Woodlands, using Music and Drama to develop our children’s confidence, expressive abilities, performance skills and creativity.

Music

Children have Music lessons every week, learning instruments such as the recorder and keyboard as well as formal singing, composing, song writing, recording, music technology and standard music notation.

Many children opt for extra one to one music lessons with specialist visiting teachers including; guitar, ukelele, piano, violin, drums, singing, and more. Children display their knowledge and progress in regular choral concerts and showcase events.

We have a dedicated Drama and Music studio equipped with instruments, as well as a private room for one to one lessons, private tuition and practice.

Speech, Drama & Performing Arts

Our children enjoy the opportunity to explore and extend their creative skills through a variety of dramatic approaches. Performing Arts classes introduce the children to theatre skills, including dancing and singing, whilst Speech and Drama lessons offer a more formal approach to performance and often cover elements of elocution within the classroom.

Many pupils take part in the popular course run by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) at lunchtimes and after school. LAMDA examination points at the highest level count towards university (QCAS) points.

Theatre

All children are involved in our Christmas production, and have other chances to perform throughout the year; recent musical productions include “Wicked”, “Hercules” and “The Lion King”.

Visits to the theatre and workshops with professional actors in London all enhance our Creative Arts provision.

Additional Support

The Speech and Drama teacher helps children with speech needs and supports children on a one to one basis if they are nervous or would like extra help in preparing for speaking at assemblies, putting together presentations or in productions. We are able to assist with arranging the support of a speech therapist if required.

Extra-Curricular Activities

We also offer a range of extra-curricular creative activities through our extensive clubs programme, including Woodlands in the West End, Woodlands Stars, Choir and Art.
